Day 17- Coupeville on Whidbey Island, WA

                                                               Saturday 7/7/12
We awoke in the town of Arlington and had another especially pleasant experience shopping at their local Walmart. Not only were the locals extremely friendly and helpful but so were the staff. It does seem that Arlington also thinks highly of it's small town as the souvenir shop has just as many Arlington postcards as it does for Seattle and the rest of Washington. After gasing up (a staggering experience everytime the receipt prints out, trust me) we drove to Whidbey Island.

Isaiah has had the pleasure of visiting the island before but this was my first time. We drove along the island for about 45 minutes or so until we came upon the town of Coupeville. This is a lovely little town and Saturday is the perfect day to experience it's charm. Each Saturday the town hosts a decent sized farmer's market with as many booths as there are likely residents. We walked through the market sampling creamy cheeses, smelling the food from down south (real Louisana cooking in Coupeville, WA?) and scooping up as many name-your-price books from the library sale as we could. We then ventured around the town (about two and a half blocks or so) and picked up some very special chocolate; the kind Annie, Lizzie and I would get in Germany and finished our tour of the city on the marina. Inside the marina boat house is a small educational section about the killer whales home to the area. Now mostly called Orcas instead of killer whales (since they are actually in the dolphin family) it wasn't discovered until the last few decades that the Orcas in the area only eat fish or squid, not mammals. Since this is quite a small town our adventure did not take long and so we finished the day in Oak Harbor at the Windjammer park. Though there were kids crazed from long lasting water balloon fights we were able to find some sancutary in the park and enjoy it's large windmill and scenic shoreline. And where else to spend the night but Walmart.  -A
